Grounded and Growing: Earth Day 2025 at Baton Roots Community Farm

On April 19, 2025, Baton Roots Community Farm turned into a lively hub for environmental action, bringing together community members, volunteers, and eco-enthusiasts for a memorable Earth Day celebration. Held at BREC’s Howell Community Park, this year's event highlighted the collaborative efforts of all programs under The Walls Project, reflecting a strong commitment to both nature and community.

The day was filled with meaningful activities and concrete steps aimed at improving local ecosystems. Volunteers made significant contributions. They planted 20 trees and 800 plants, including delicious okra, vibrant pollinator-friendly flowers, and fragrant herbs.

Volunteers moved 370 feet of essential landscaping fabric, which plays a critical role in supporting plant growth and soil health. Additionally, they transported over 10,000 pounds of mulch, including mulching 220 feet of strawberry beds, showcasing how teamwork can drive extraordinary results in sustainability efforts.

Baton Roots Community Farm featured a special farm table operated by students from the Hustle & Grow youth farming program. These young farmers worked together to distribute an impressive variety of fresh produce. Hustle & Grow youth farmers and instructors gave away dozens of seed packets, 75 cucumber seedlings, 120 heads of lettuce, and over 200 pounds of sweet potatoes. Hustle & Grow educates participants about food systems and also empowers them with the skills and knowledge to be the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs.
