LSU Lab Campers Explore Pigment to Paint

This month, The Walls Project visited LSU Lab School for a colorful, hands-on Pigment to Paint workshop led by Office Manager and Eco Art Educator Ann Riche.

During the class, campers explored how flowers, leaves, spices, and other natural materials can be transformed into vibrant watercolor paints. They learned how pigments are extracted, mixed with a binder, and worked by hand to create paint in a variety of rich, earthy shades. Campers also had the chance to experiment with the materials, observe how different ingredients produced different colors and textures, and use their handmade paints to create original artwork.

The activity offered a fun way to connect art, science, and the natural world. Campers practiced curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving while discovering that many of the colors used in art can begin with materials found in gardens, kitchens, and the environment around us.
