Call for Artists: Mid City–Old Goodwood Utility Box Art Walk

A new public art trail is coming to Mid City and Old Goodwood.

The Walls Project, Mid City Merchants, and the Old Goodwood Crime Prevention and Neighborhood Improvement District are seeking one or two artists or artist teams to create original artwork for ten utility boxes throughout the area. The finished boxes will form a walkable art trail that reflects the people, places, history, architecture, businesses, and character of the surrounding neighborhoods.

This is a digital design commission, so selected artists will create the artwork and production-ready files, while printing and installation will be handled by the project partners. The total artist-design budget is up to $5,000 for all ten boxes, or $500 per box.

Artists are encouraged to think bold, colorful, and neighborhood-specific. Each box should work as its own piece of art while still feeling connected to the larger trail, with designs that can catch your eye from the road and offer more details to discover up close.

Professional artists, illustrators, muralists, designers, and artist teams age 18 and older are welcome to apply, and both emerging and established artists are encouraged to submit. Experience with utility boxes is not required.

Applications are due September 4, 2026. Artists do not need to submit a finished utility-box design with their application — a portfolio, short interest narrative, and preliminary direction are enough to get started.We can’t wait to see how local artists reimagine these everyday corners of Mid City and Old Goodwood.
