Through an exciting collaboration with Southern University Fashion Department's Elite Fashion Society and the Have A Heart Foundation, The Walls Project's Culture Club high school students had the opportunity to transform denim and creative ideas into wearable works of art.

Their custom-designed denim pieces were featured in the Have A Heart Foundation's 6th Annual Anti-Bullying and Suicide Awareness Runway Show on October 10, 2026, under the inspiring theme, "Every Style Matters."

The experience demonstrated how fashion education can extend beyond the classroom, giving students the opportunity to explore their individuality, develop practical skills, and participate in a meaningful community-centered event.

Denim Reimagined: Creativity Meets Sustainability

By incorporating upcycling into the creative process, students were introduced to an important concept within the fashion industry: innovative design does not always require starting from scratch. Sometimes, the most compelling creations begin with reimagining what already exists.

Through the transformation of denim into customized garments, students explored the creative and environmental potential of repurposed clothing. The project brought classroom instruction to life by allowing students to apply creativity, problem-solving, and design thinking in a practical setting.

Throughout the experience, Culture Club students had the opportunity to explore several important concepts:

  • Fashion Design and Construction: Transforming ideas into customized garments and wearable designs.

  • Sustainability and Upcycling: Recognizing the creative and environmental potential of repurposed clothing.

  • Personal Style and Self-Expression: Using fashion to communicate individuality, identity, and confidence.

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Understanding how creative ideas can develop into marketable products and future business opportunities.

  • Collaboration and Professionalism: Contributing to a larger creative vision and preparing work for a public runway presentation.

By creating unique pieces for the fashion show, students gained exposure to the creative process behind a public presentation and saw how individual contributions become part of a larger production.
