DAF Spotlight: Veterans' Homestead Project

Supporting Veterans Through Community Agriculture

In Spring 2025, The Walls Project received a generous $10,000 Donor Advised Fund (DAF) gift from the Michael and Elaine Moravan Foundation, restricted to support the sustainability of the Veterans’ Homestead Project. This gift has been pivotal in helping veterans, their families, and neighbors grow stronger together through land stewardship and community agriculture.

With these funds, we were able to:

  • Provide direct support to the farm’s operations, helping improve its capacity to grow food and engage volunteers.

  • Launch a new website and establish social media accounts to increase visibility, share stories, and recruit community support.

  • Host the inaugural Veteran Harvest Fest, bringing together veterans, families, and community members to celebrate resilience, connection, and the harvest season.

  • Support fundraising efforts for a $25,000 tractor, a critical tool for building the farm’s long-term sustainability.

This investment is not just about farming; it’s about honoring the service of our veterans by creating opportunities for them to heal, connect, and lead through stewardship of the land.

What is a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)?

A Donor Advised Fund is a charitable giving account that allows donors to make a contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants to nonprofits over time. Think of it as a flexible philanthropic tool that makes giving easier, more strategic, and often more impactful.

DAFs are one of the fastest-growing vehicles for philanthropy in the U.S., and they give donors the ability to support organizations like The Walls Project in ways that are both timely and transformative.

The Michael and Elaine Moravan Foundation’s support shows how DAF giving can empower veterans and their families while creating lasting community impact. We are deeply grateful for this partnership and look forward to continuing to grow the Veterans' Homestead Project into a beacon of resilience and sustainability.
