Florence Crittenton High School is not your typical campus. It is a school designed for young mothers who are navigating some of life's hardest chapters while still showing up, every day, to build a future. So when SustainEd completed the construction of a food forest and school garden on the campus grounds (serving as a living, growing space for students to connect with the earth and with each other) it deserved more than just plants. It deserved art.

That is where and Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation came in. And that is where muralist Sofi Rami stepped forward.

Sofi led a collaborative design process that is at the heart of everything we believe about community murals: the people who live and work and learn in a space deserve to have a voice in what covers its walls. She worked directly with Florence Crittenton students and administration, listening to their stories, drawing out their ideas, and weaving their input into a design that feels entirely, unmistakably theirs.

And then they painted it together. Students mixed colors and filled panels. They stayed for hours, brush in hand.

The result is spectacular. The mural does what the best public art always does: it makes you stop, it makes you feel something, and it makes you understand the people who made it a little bit better than you did before. Against the backdrop of SustainEd's food forest the mural is not decoration. It is a declaration.

This mural is a gateway and a gesture, welcoming all who enter the garden with a message: you’re entering a community that honors its past, invests in its youth, and believes in the power of art and nutrition to connect us all.

Sofi Rami

Sofi Rami is a 1st generation Colombian American artist. Her vibrant canvases are a kaleidoscope of cultural influences and bold artistic exploration. Sofi Rami's creative journey began with a deep desire to forge connections through the exploration of the human experience. While Sofi Rami’s public art brings together and celebrates communities, her studio work delves into a more intimate dance between representation and abstraction. In both practices, Sofi Rami paints with acrylics and spray paint to create dynamic and dreamlike landscapes. Her abstract compositions are vessels for weaving together personal narratives, cultural heritage, and a profound connection to the natural world. Figurative elements peek through the abstract layers; these glimpses invite the viewer to participate in the narrative. Allowing viewers to draw parallels with their own experiences and emotions. Sofi Rami hopes that her artwork becomes a space for individual reflection and collective empathy. A chance to celebrate the vast diversity of emotions within the human experience through form, color, and texture.
