Combining Art and Action: Earth Day Baton Rouge

Updated: 11 hours ago

This Earth Day, we didn’t just celebrate the planet—we painted, planted, and pieced together a vision of collective power and creative renewal.

At Mitchell’s & Co (5011 Prescott Rd), artist Morgan Udoh transformed the salon/barbershop-turned-community hub into a canvas of care and connection. Ubuntu honors owners Staci and Venny Mitchell—pillars of North Baton Rouge—and nods to the site’s blossoming future as a yoga space, coffeehouse, and thrift.

Tree of Life

Inside Baton Roots’ utility yard, Culture Club teens Allen Robinson and Janiyaria Cage, with Morgan Udoh’s support, painted a vibrant Tree of Life as a symbol of youth, growth, and rooted community.

Upcycled Sculptures & Interactive Installations

Twin artists Denise and Desiree Verrett turned 35 lbs of reclaimed paint brushes—collected from three years of community murals—into a whimsical wayfinding gator sculpture that now lives at the farm. Earth Day attendees helped apply the finishing touches and created their own mini brush sculptures to take home, blending creativity with sustainability.

Meanwhile, Culture Club student Jamiyah Odom and Artist Guild member Kelly Jackson led families in transforming recycled paint buckets into vibrant planters, proof that beauty can bloom from anything.

Even the smallest bits of waste weren’t left behind: reclaimed, flocced paint particles were mixed with concrete and art library treasures to make one-of-a-kind garden pavers that neighbors took home, making sure not a drop of the public art process went to waste.

600 lbs of recycled materials were transformed into meaningful, take-home art, rooted in purpose and possibility.

Earth BR 2025 wasn’t just a day, it was a movement. Thanks for growing it with us.

This event was made possible through support from South Arts and the National Endowment of the Arts, Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, Humana, and Giraphic Prints.
