A New Vision Beneath I-110

What if the space beneath I-110 felt less like somewhere you pass through and more like a place that connects you to the city around you?

That’s the idea behind a new public art and placemaking project from The Walls Project, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Our Town grant. The project will bring a coordinated series of exterior artworks to the area beneath I-110 between Louisiana Avenue and North Boulevard, helping create a more welcoming connection between downtown Baton Rouge and surrounding neighborhoods.

Artists, residents, and local partners will all have a role in shaping the work. Selected artists will take part in community engagement and create pieces that reflect Baton Rouge’s people, histories, and sense of place while also supporting wayfinding, walking, biking, and future programming along the corridor. It’s an early piece of a larger vision for connecting downtown and North Baton Rouge through public art, recreation, and cultural trails.

The Walls Project is currently seeking professional muralists and artist teams to be part of that vision. This first step is an RFQ, so artists do not need to create an original design proposal to apply. Artist fees will range from $5,000 to $20,000 per installation, depending on the scope of the work.

Applications are due October 31, 2026 at 11:59 PM CST, with installation expected to be completed by May 2027.
