Creative Paths, Real-World Experience
Culture Club students are well into their chosen creative paths this semester, and each track is giving them the chance to go beyond simply trying something new. They’re learning how ideas develop, how skills improve through practice, and what it takes to turn what they’re making into something ready to share with others.
In public art, students are exploring 3D community art installations using materials like cardboard, papier-mâché, and ceramics. As they create, they’re also practicing reflection and revision, looking at what works, what could be stronger, and how to keep improving their pieces. They’re working toward a full exhibition during White Light Night at Baton Rouge Music Studios.
Our fashion and cosmetology students are also preparing for a real-world showcase. They’re creating pieces that will be featured in the 6th Annual Bullying & Suicide Awareness Runway Show, presented by Southern University’s Elite Fashion Society in partnership with the Have A Heart Foundation. It’s a chance for students to see their work move from the classroom into a larger fashion event centered on creativity, purpose, and community.
In the culinary track, students are learning from Chef Kaala Lawla through a hands-on program that covers much more than recipes. They’re building skills in cooking, baking, knife safety, food safety, hospitality, and customer service, while also getting introduced to menu development, recipe costing, catering, restaurant operations, and entrepreneurship.
Chef Kaala’s approach follows a simple process: learn it, watch it, make it, evaluate it. Students get to practice what they’re learning, receive feedback, and build both technical skills and professional habits like teamwork, communication, organization, and accountability.
Across all three tracks, Culture Club is giving students space to experiment, revise, and see where their interests can take them, whether that’s an art exhibition, a runway, a kitchen, or somewhere completely new.
