Apply for an Apprenticeship with Baton Roots

About the Program

The Agroforestry Apprenticeship program is a year-long program which trains apprentices in horticulture, arboriculture, green infrastructure, and community-driven programming. The apprenticeship begins in January 2025 and lasts until December 2025. Applications for the 2025 cohort are due on December 1st at 11:59pm.


This program is a hands-on, technical training offered in partnership with Baton Rouge Green and leading local experts in green industries. Apprentices receive training, education, and field experiences from Baton Roots Community Farm, Baton Rouge Green, and additional partners.


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the United States

  • 18+ years old  

  • Must commit to the fulllength of program (12 months), including availability for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 9 AM - 4:30 PM for in-person training and fieldwork.

     

Apprentices are:

  • Prepared for state licensure exams in horticulture and arboriculture. Certification prep courses and exam fees paid for through the program.

  • Red Cross CPR/AED certified

  • Provided with PPE (personal protective equipment) and tools while on job sites. Apprentices are responsible for providing their own footwear and appropriate clothing for outdoor work.

  • Connected to local and regional employers in green careers, provided support in networking and job applications.


Program Structure & Schedule

  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 AM - 4:30 PM with a 1-hour lunch break (lunch is not provided).

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays are generally divided between classroom learning and fieldwork. Wednesdays focus on fieldwork and visits to community partner sites.

  • Additional fieldwork offerings take place on Mondays, Fridays, evenings, and weekends at the discretion of the apprentice.

  • Instruction takes place in English.


Compensation

  • Apprentices are paid $20/hr (up to 25 hours/week) for program time including classroom learning, fieldwork, and site visits.

  • Payment happens bi-weekly via direct deposit.

  • Benefits are not provided, however apprentices are eligible to join The Walls Project's health insurance plan should they choose.


The apprenticeship begins in January 2025 and lasts until December 2025. Applications for the 2025 cohort are due on December 1st at 11:59 PM. Interviews will take place during the first two weeks of December 2025.
